When managing your Windows 7 clients, and ensuring they patch efficiently and reliably, you always want to ensure they have the latest Windows Update Agent. So, how do you know which version that is? When was the latest WUA released? There never seems to be a quick list of the most recent WUA versions.
There is a Technet article out there, but it hasn’t been touched since 2014.
Ronni Pederson has a fantastic post about how to update, but it doesn’t have the latest client either.
This post will be used to keep a running list of the Windows Update Agents for Windows 7. Some good news is with the new update rollup methodology that started this month, October 2016, there is a handy list of updates to Windows 7/Server 2008 R2.
Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 Update History (starting July 2016)

Here is what I have gathered regarding WUA versions on Windows 7.
I’ve honestly been searching the web for a long while looking and hoping for something like this. To the point where I thought I’d put up a page just to aggregate and track this information. But, I’m glad to see you did this! Great Job! and Thank you!
@ConfigMgrGeek
Thanks Gabriel, I have been in the exact same boat. I hope to keep it up to date!
Just ran into an issue when trying to apply KB3172605 in order to update the WU agent. The reason was due to KB3177467 not having been installed. So, just as a note to anyone reading this there seems to be a dependency on KB3177467 being installed in order for KB3172605 to be ‘applicable’. Hope it helps…
Thank you for the information, very usefull 🙂
Anybody saw that information available for Windows 10?
I haven’t, no.
This is a life saver! Thank you so much for taking the time to put this list together. I’ve been making a habit out of accepting and re-donating Windows 7 machines from friends and family who have simply given up on their PC’s thinking they are garbage. I’ll rebuild W7 from the ground up, but the updates always give me an issue. ALWAYS. This took care of it on the first try with my latest machine (from which I am typing this reply).
You rock!
Awesome, thanks Nomisuke.
This is great information!
Can someone provide exact download link for kb3161608 (for WUA version 7.6.7601.23453). This update is superseded, not in the catalog too or SCCM. I previously installed the last January update from https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/22801/windows-7-and-windows-server-2008-r2-update-history, this didn’t change the version and all other previous updates are “not applicable to your computer”. So my computer (ant other) is with last rollup from January KB3212646 but with old WUA 7.6.7600.256.
It looks like it may have been pulled due to the July Update Rollup. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/3172605/july-2016-update-rollup-for-windows-7-sp1-and-windows-server-2008-r2-sp1
I saw that, but KB3172605 is not applicable to me (tested on few computers), even when remove newer updates and try again. On the other hand the newer updates don’t encrease the version. So how should I obtain WUA 7.6.7601.23453 when the only way is KB3161608 which it missing and automatic updates are denied 🙂
Check the reply above from Gabriel.

Correct! In fact I saw it before, just I lost my self in so many updates installed this days. Thank you!
Nice! Glad its working for ya.
Hi All,
Can some one please let me know latest Windows Update agent released?
Is this the correct one : Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB3172605)
I’m in need to update WUA for more than 4000 machines.KB3172605 needs KB3177467 to be installed as pre-requisite.Is there any way to find WUA stand alone package?
Unfortunately there is no standalone. In order to install the latest you need the prereq and the rollup.
Awesome list!
Thanks!

Hi Arogya, you cannot install from that link, but you can from the catalog. https://catalog.update.microsoft.com/
Thanks Daniel, KB4025341 is correct one right? to get 7.6.7601.23735 windows update agent version.

Hi Harish, all Windows 7 Monthly updates include the WUA updates. The latest WUA was included in the April 2018 update. I have updated the blog post. Thanks!
Hi,
I’m stuck at Windows 7 Update Agent 7.6.7601.23453 which means that every Monthly Rollup fails.
Windows 7 SP 1 x64 on Lenovo ThinkPad T500 (Core 2 Duo).
And regarding the above list does the agent version change with every Monthly Rollup?
If yes please update the list until the latest:
November 27, 2018—KB4467108 (Preview of Monthly Rollup)
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4467108
November 13, 2018—KB4467107 (Monthly Rollup)
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4467107
Thank you in advance.
Hi Christian, not every monthly roll-up includes an update to the WUA. I believe the last one that did was April 2018. If you install any CU after that date it should update to the latest.
Today I tried to install KB4467107 but that results in Error 80073AA2.
I followed https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/949104/how-to-update-the-windows-update-agent-to-the-latest-version and wuaueng.dll shows version 7.6.7601.23453 from 13/05/2016 11:55 pm.
Here are a few things to try to resolve that error.

Hi Daniel, Thank you so much for pointer regarding the update agent post.
We are facing some weird but common issue which keeps on popping in our environment over the last few months.
In a particular case ,over 50 + machines are facing issues in installing updates through SCCM and even manual installation are failing.
continuous error as 0X87D00668 in SCCM software detected actionable after apply.
Update history is showing as successful for both SCCM and manual update installation .
In CBS logs its throwing error as ailed to evaluate self update [HRESULT = 0x80070bc9 – ERROR_FAIL_REBOOT_REQUIRED] because of which we are not able to upgrade even the windows update agent to newer version (7.6.7601.24085) in 50 + machines.
Please suggest
Here are a couple things to try Harish.

This page was the finish line for me.
I have a windows 7 home premium sp1 machine that was riddled with infections and wouldn’t update..
after getting rid of all the nasties (combofix, superantispyware, malwarebytes, sfc /scannow) it stilll wouldn’t update.
These scripts proved useful https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/971058
WU/WUA Windows Update failed mainly with 0x8007000E
I fetched the latest version 2018 listed here of WUA for windows 7
7.6.7601.248056 April 2018 https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4093118
applied it standalone.
and also added fixed Google DNS servers 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 in case my ISP was doing funny things with WU patch caches upstream..
Reboot and as Eddie Izzard says “et voila!”
downloading 77 patches and i’m back in business!
thanks heaps
Glad it helped!
